Phyllis Hartman is the Founder and CEO of Hartman Design Group, Inc., an award-winning commercial design firm specializing in the new construction and renovation of multi-family properties since 1987. Since founding the firm, Phyllis has committed herself to creating interiors that enrich the community and the lives of people who live and work in them. With that goal in mind, she’s built an award-winning team of talented designers who’ve designed sustainable and healthy interior environments in scores of projects across the Washington region and beyond.
HDG has a reputation for innovative design that extends throughout the many specialties including multi-family, hospitality, senior living, affordable housing, and model homes. Through numerous articles and white papers, Phyllis has established herself as an authority on topics such as the post-Covid future of remote work and multi-family design; the importance of biophilia in interior design; adaptive reuse and the new relevance of old buildings; and the multi-family industry’s amenities race.
As a board member for VisArts, a non-profit art organization in Montgomery County, Maryland, Phyllis is dedicated to promoting and supporting local and emerging artists. “I believe there is great art in every community; it’s a matter of nurturing the talent that’s around us.”

Phyllis is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) as a Certified Interior Designer, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a member of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW).
